With all the moving, company, traveling, and other life stuff that's been happening I haven't had as much time to work on this piece as I would have liked. Nevertheless, I have new material to show.

I've added a new section that builds upon previous material but with a lighter texture. It starts with pizzicato bass, harp, and solo clarinet with the rest of the woodwinds joining before the climax of this section. The cadence here is an altered version of the first one and is designed to segway directly into the next section which I will be working on this week. The 7/4 section will still be in the piece, but it will come at a much later point.

In the meantime, I'm continuing to work on the projects I've outlined in my last couple of videos. Hopefully both of these compositions will be finished or near completion by September. As usual, when I resume podcasting I'll bring you up to date on my progress.

The reason I'm moving my studio downtown is so that I'll be closer to where opportunities are. Being situated between the campus and the downtown area will let me reach out to student and independent filmmakers plus tap into the vibrant arts community that exist here. Once everything is set up I'll take you on tour of my set up. :)

Okay...

I admit that I've been a little bit lax on the podcasting as of late. However, I've been fairly busy as I'm in the process of moving to a new apartment and have begun work on yet another orchestral piece (not the one I mentioned in the last podcast.) This new piece has the working title of 'Triumph' though I'm sure the title will change before I'm finished.

The piece starts out with a repeating figure played by the harp. The violins then enter with the main theme followed by the cellos (also playing the main theme). Section by section, other instruments enter with harmonic accompaniment until the theme reaches its climax. Up until this point I'm fairly satisfied with what I've done. However the transitional measure leading to the 7/4 section are problematic for me as I'm still not sure what to due about the triplet figures played by the upper string parts. As for the 7/4 section, there are a few changes that I'm making that involve the structure of the accompanying parts that will allow me to take this section where I want it to go.

Although the topics in my earlier views are fascinating, they're really more appropriate for a written blog entry where topics can be covered in greater detail. So instead of having one topic that I discuss for ten minutes, I decided to break my podcast into three segments.

The first segment of the podcast covers what I've been working on that week as a composer. So that way, everyone who watches the podcast can keep track of the progress I make on my music. I will from time to time, discuss new releases, gig announcements, and answer viewer questions if there are any. If you would like to ask me a question, just send it to adam (AT) adambuker.com.

The next segment deals with my musings for the week on topics pertaining to the philosophy of music composition or even philosophy in general. I anticipate that with most of these I'll have a blog post that covers the week's topic in greater detail and/or posted links to relevant articles on other sites.

The final segment deals with other things that I like and despise. Usually, I'll be reviewing recordings, books on music, and music related websites. Sometimes, I'll post reviews of items that aren't directly related to music if I think that they may be of interest to the viewers like works of art, movies, fiction, etc. I won't have any formalized system of rating items. However, I'll usually recommend with enthusiasm, recommend with some reservations (and explain what those are), or recommend that you avoid it like the plague.

Let me know what you think of the new podcast format. Send a message to me through YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter. You can also send me an email to the address that I mentioned above.

The group is called Fiction Writers for Romanticism. The premise behind it is to form a group of writers to write fiction that appeals to that rational and passionate sense-of-life shared by so many who are Objectivists. Although I don't write fiction myself, I'll be keeping close tabs on this group as I may start a similar one for composers and musicians. Here's an excerpt from the blurb on the group's main page:

Welcome to Fiction Writers for Romanticism, where Objectivists and students of Objectivism, who also seek to write fiction (and are probably already working on something), can chat.

Beginning writers and amateurs and professionals are all welcome.

I created this group because I think that one of the ways to create a more rational culture is to encourage the creation of works of art that reward the rational elements in people -- works that ultimately create a feeling that rationality ultimately works and will lead to joy. Just like in real life.
